BIRCWH Program- Our Research Plan
Request for Applications for Northwestern University
Career Development in Women's Health (CDWH) program (K12 Program) support
by an NIH Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health
(BIRCWH) Scholars Award
Principal Investigator: J. Larry Jameson, MD, PhD
Co-Directors: Andrea Dunaif, MD, Teresa K. Woodruff, PhD
The Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) Scholars Program at Northwestern University has established the Career Development in Women's Health (CDWH) program. The purpose of the CDWH program is to develop a group of independent investigators with backgrounds in clinical medicine and basic science disciplines whose research will address high priority areas relevant to women's health. The program will concentrate on five areas that are fundamental to women's health and disease:
The CDWH program aims to create a focused curriculum, provide strong mentorship, and engaged faculty development activities.
The CDWH Program is designed to support the early research career development of junior faculty who will be engaged in interdisciplinary translational and/or clinical research related to women's health. This award provides salary support and additional resources to ensure protected time for mentored research and didactic training in research. We will accept applications from junior faculty members as well as from senior fellows; fellows must have a faculty appointment before support can be initiated. Faculty members who are being recruited to Northwestern can also apply for this award.
We invite nominations from your department of possible
Scholar candidates to begin funding by July 1, 2008.
The applications
are due Monday, March 3, 2008. Please submit applications electronically
in PDF format to:

PROVISIONS OF THE AWARDS
The CDWH Scholar position is a junior faculty appointment, not a fellowship.
SALARY
Salary
support of up to $75,000 (for a minimum of 75 percent effort) each
year commensurate with Northwestern’s usual
salary structure for persons of equivalent qualifications, experience,
and rank. Departments may supplement
the NIH contribution; however, the supplementation may not be from
Federal funds unless specifically authorized by the Federal program
from which such
funds are derived. In no case may PHS funds be used for salary supplementation.
Any supplementation of salary may not require extra duties or responsibilities
that would interfere with the purpose of this award. The total salary
requested must be based on a full-time, 12-month staff appointment.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT
Up to $11,875 per Scholar per year can be requested for the following types
of expenses: (a) research supplies, equipment, technical personnel and/or
statistical services; (b) tuition and fees and books related to didactic
courses or career development. In addition, Scholars are required to attend
the annual NIH BIRCWH meeting and up to $1,500 is provided to cover travel
expenses.
ANNUAL REVIEW
Ongoing CDWH Scholar support will be based on an annual performance review.
It is expected that Scholars who are funded by this mechanism will apply
for other research career development awards or other independent grants
during the second year of their training in this award.
